Chasing and Repoussé: Scientific Illustrations

Refining our Chasing and Repoussé technique through the observations and study of scientific illustrations. Our focus will be on a variety of plants and insects, and the how to use complementary material sciences to accomplish dramatic and realistic reliefs in sheet metal.This workshop is suitable for any experience level, which is the beauty of studying nature, there is something for everyone.

Be prepared to do a little drawing and sculpting, please bring ear protection and suitable clothing. And lastly do think about what plant or insects you would like to spend a week observing. I have a variety of projects available to choose from as well if you would rather make a choice on site. 

All tooling provided, the appropriate chisels and hammers, and clay will all be provided.

Jayne Redman is known for her unusual way of working with metal in three dimensions, often using multiples of the same shape to convey a single idea. Using nature as her inspiration she considers combinations of form and function, integrating mechanics with design and applying innovative engineering methods. How petals are attached to each other can generate an idea for an assembly process. Studying the curve of a leaf can lead to a new forming technique. The graceful bend of a flower stem can become an ear wire design.

This workshop will teach you how to develop patterns for many of the engineering concepts that Jayne Redman works with in her jewelry. Jayne will take you through the design process from initial drawings to final prototypes and finished pieces. You will learn the principles behind centrally radiating forms, properly nested forms, spacing for slotted forms, using faux hinging, and tab construction. You will also learn computer skills for design layout, scaling and transforming.  

Self-registering one piece blanking dies will give you the ability to quickly create multiples in metal sheet of the shapes you conceive, affording you the time to get lost in the design process and experiment with forming and assembling. When you learn the method of sawing blanking dies from flat stock tool steel you will be amazed at how quickly you can go from original idea to duplicated shape as you make and use your own dies during class.

Copper for samples, saw blades, drill bits, and tool steel will be available for purchase from Jayne. She will supply her rotational bench pin and a magnetic protractor for each student to use. They will also be available for purchase at a special price at the end of the workshop.
